Make Toolbar Sticky

The toolbar in the CMS that allows users to bold, change header types, add lists, hyperlink, and more used to be sticky (I have used Dato since 2021). It recently appears to have changed, which makes editing text within Dato much more burdensome.

Is there any way to make it sticky again when scrolling down a longer piece of text?

Hi @pstraus,

Could you please clarify which field types this is happening in? Is it a structured text field, HTML field, or…?

If you’re not sure, could you please send me the URL to the record where this is happening and I can take a look there? (You can DM me on this board or email support@datocms.com).

Thank you!

@pstraus,

I did a bit of testing with this… and you can force the toolbar to be “sticky” if you full-screen that particular field. But it’s a bit different between Markdown, HTML, and Structured Text fields.

For Markdown fields

For HTML fields

For Structured Text

There currently seems to be a bug with this… (maybe this is what you noticed?)

Normally if you do this:

You’ll get a full-screen editor with the toolbar at the top, but right now that seems bugged. (I’ll let the devs know!).

In the meantime, you should be able to highlight a section and a floating toolbar will pop up, in focus mode or not:

Hope that helps a bit for now, but I’ll let the devs know about the focus mode’s missing toolbar.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the reply!

The toolbar does remain sticky when I open up the full-screen option, but as you mentioned, it is not sticky when I scroll in the main text editing field (not sure of the exact field name but I believe it is structured text). I included a screenshot of the section as well.

Also when I highlight the text as you suggested, I only get the option to hyperlink–I don’t have the other tools like bolding and underlining text.

Thanks for letting the devs know about the issue.

Believe the field is a multiple paragraph text field

Hi @pstraus,

Thank you for the clarification. That looks like a HTML field you’re using (a subtype of a multi-paragraph text field). If you could please link me to the record in question, I can verify that.

Do you mean that, until recently, its top toolbar would remain fixed as you scrolled, even outside of fullscreen mode?

I was able to find your project and the field in question. I can see how that scrolling toolbar makes it harder to work on longer posts!

I can’t remember if this was the way it was before, but I’ll let the devs know just in case!

Ok great, thank you! And yes, up until recently, the top toolbar remained fixed as I scrolled outside of fullscreen mode.

Hello @pstraus

Now this should be implemented!
Thank you once again for the feedback
Let us know if it works as expected

Thank you, @m.finamor! It does work as expected now

Quick note here that there still seems to be toolbar-related bugs in Firefox and Safari (Chrome works now). We’re looking into it!

(Edit: These have been fixed, and the toolbars should work right on all the browsers now.)
